CODE FLAGS - 41 cards in the pack Each card shows a flag of the International Code in colour on the face, with the signal letter or number and the meaning of the signal flag on the reverse. The phonetic spelling of the letter is also shown, making the set doubly useful. Although no longer required by some yachting authorities, professional seamen and navies still need knowledge of flag signals. Also in the set is a useful instruction card.
IALA BUOYAGE SYSTEM - 31 cards in the pack All mariners need a comprehensive knowledge of the buoyage rules and should be able instantly to identify a mark at first sight. These Flip Cards show 31 different buoys and navigational marks in colour, with the meaning and position, together with the light characteristics on the back of the card. Both the Cardinal and IALA marks are featured, as well as the more recent preferred channel buoys. This set shows the 'A' Region buoys which are found in most areas of the world.
LIGHTS AND SHAPES - 50 cards in the pack An extremely useful set of cards which makes a difficult subject much easier. Each card shows a vessel's display of night-time navigation lights (in colour) or daytime shapes, as seen from your position. In the case of the cards showing lights the vessel's silhouette is just discernible. The meaning is shown on the back of the cards as usual. This set has been a "best seller" for over 40 years because learning the lights and shapes is a major part of a mariner's study and without Flip Cards it's not easy.
MARINE RADIO - 49 cards in the pack A new set of Flip Cards covering the recent (and developing) GMDSS systems which are becoming universal. The cards show equipment and procedures for HF, VHF and MF, including Digital Selective Calling. Seamen preparing for the Short Range Operators Certificate or the Long Range Operators Certificate will find the cards particularly useful, while yachtsmen should also be prepared to acquire the appropriate certificate for future use. Without doubt, the coming system.
METEOROLOGY - 50 cards in the pack This pack covers Meteorology mainly in UK waters with particular relevance to the RYA courses. The essential definitions are dealt with and wind forces and their effect on sea states are well illustrated. There are also a number of photographs of cloud formations and the resulting weather systems. These cards have questions and answers on both sides, so effectively have 98 problems for the student to deal with.
MORSE CODE - 36 cards in the pack Morse symbols, both letters and numerals, with the back of the card giving the meaning. Also in the set is a useful instruction card. For those mariners needing a knowledge of Morse these Flip Cards have proved to be a quick and simple method of learning and checking.
RULES OF THE ROAD - 50 cards in the pack International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea also known as ‘Col Regs’ - These cards show the view forward from the deck of various vessels (power, sailing and fishing) of developing traffic situations at sea. In each case the mariner has to decide the correct course of action to navigate his/her vessel through the hazard. The reverse of the card gives the proper course and also quotes the relevant collision rule.
SOUND & LIGHT SIGNALS - 47 cards in the pack This pack of Flip Cards illustrates the signals made by ships at sea, and covers lights, fog signals and the usual distress and search and rescue signals. They differ from the Lights and Shapes cards in that they show signals rather than navigation signs. The meaning is shown on the back of the card as usual.
